Muslim Beauty Pageant Is Satanic, Unislmaic – Nigerian Muslims

A cross section of Nigerian Muslims have berated organisers and participants in the Muslim Miss World beauty pageant incidentally won by a Nigerian, Miss Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola, a student of the University of Lagos. All of those who bared their mind in today’s edition of Vanguard newspaper condemned the pageant held in Indonesia on September 18, describing it variously as a show of shame and un-Islamic and warning of heavy consequences from Allah for both the organisers and participants in the competition. In a major article on the issue entitled “Miss Muslimah World: A rash invention”, Ishola Balogun wrote: “I listened and watched with amazement comments from people who tagged themselves liberal Muslims rationalising the show of shame in Indonesia last week where a Nigerian Muslim Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola was crowned the Miss Muslimah World. More stupefying is that those who ought to know and point out where the organisers of the pageant goofed and where the pageant is antithetical to Islam rather chose to celebrate it. Very unfortunate. “Woman, as taught by Islam since the light of Islam, is a precious and most valuable being. She is to be protected, honoured, treasured and valued. And like a treasure, her beauty should be respected, hidden for the purpose of her security and safety so as not to be exposed to abuses by unworthy eyes and lustful minds. “That is why the Quran in Chapter 24 verse 31 says: “And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; and that they should not display their beauty

The Industry Needs Divine Intervention - Nigerian Actress, Ejiro Okurame Exposed Lesbianism & Sexual Harrassment In Nollywood

In this latest interview, star actress Ejiro Okurame talked at length on her Lesbi experience inNollywood and how many female movies stars are involved in what she called a demonic lifestyle.
Eji Okurame also narrates her encounter with a lesbian in Abuja among other issues;

Interview excerpt below;

Interviewer: Were you sexually harassed as an upcoming actress?

Ejiro Okurame: I didn’t set myself up to be sexually harassed. However, the issue of sexual harassment is in every organization not just Nollywood. It happens everywhere.

Interviewer: What is your view about Lesbi in the industry?

I think it is demonic. I won’t say much about it because a lot of people are involved. The industry needs divine intervention so God can erase such people from the industry. It has eaten deep and it is affecting us. That’s why we need to seek the presence of God. Lesbi is a sign of the end of time.

Interviewer: Have you been a victim before?

Ejiro Okurame: No, not really. I think it is when you give room for these things that they occur. I was in Abuja for a particular event when a lady asked me to sit on her laps. I was like ‘what, sit on your laps! For what?’ I left and got my own chair.

BIZARRE: Family Of Seven Ran Mad In Ebonyi State

For the family of Mr Ogbonnaya Ani in Umuose Urobo in the Uburu area of Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi State, life can’t be more cruel to 7 members of the household now afflicted with madness one after the other. The Ani family is being ravaged by the spirit of madness.
The sad story of the family of Mr Ogbonnaya goes thus:
Ogbonnaya Ani’s elder brother’s daughter is mentally challenged. His younger brother’s son is in the same condition. Three of his own children, a male and two females, are equally afflicted. His daughter-in-law is not left out. So, there are six mentally ill persons in the family and, perhaps, still counting. Worst still, one of Ani’s mentally challenged daughters is heavily pregnant and no one seems to know who impregnated her...

And before his first wife died, she exhibited some signs of madness.

Recently, Mr Ogbonnaya told the stranger than fiction story. There is no doubt that the madness ravaging his immediate and nuclear families have left its toll on the old man. Sadness is evident in his sunken eyes. He looked frail and his voice quakes in palpable agony as he spoke. But for the magnanimity of a relation, Mr Ani and his household would not have had a place to lay their heads. This is because his mentally challenged son, Igwe Ani, alias Martin Martin, set his house ablaze. And before help could come, the structure had been reduced to ashes.

So, currently, Ogbonnaya and his family are squatters somewhere in Uburu, Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi State.

When the reporter visited the family last Wednesday, Ozieme, his beautiful but insane daughter, was hanging around. With her tummy protruding as a result of advanced pregnancy, she looked vacantly into space, perhaps unaware of her environment and condition. A few times she smiled and muttered to herself. When asked to pose for a photograph, Ozieme obliged.

Tale like no other
“This place we are is not my house,” Ogbonnaya began. “My place is further up, after Oriebe. I relocated to this place because of the problem that I’m facing. I had a small mud house and I made it good enough for people to stay in before the problem started through my son, Igwe. It first started with Igwe and his sister, Ozieme joined later. While Igwe’s problem started at home, Ozieme’s started from outside the community. When she travelled and returned, she began to behave abnormally.”

In an agony laden voice, Ogbonnaya continued: “I don’t know how it started but we suspected or thought that Igwe joined his mates to smoke all sorts of things. I cautioned him to stop it if he was indulging in such act but there was no difference. We used to beat him to stop smoking to know if he would but to no avail. He started manifesting madness about eight years ago. He was still in primary school when it started; he was in Primary Four when he broke loose. Because of the problem, he couldn’t continue with his education. I cannot really say if he brought it upon himself by smoking certain substances or it is a problem destined to come”.

He said that the problem reached a crescendo when Igwe burnt down his house. “He used to pack all sorts of rubbish and dump in the house. It was impossible to chase him out of the house because he used to wield cutlasses and wood, threatening to harm anyone who gets close to him. At a point, he had outgrown everybody. On a certain day, he set the house ablaze and before people could come to fight the fire, things had got out of hand. That was how the building containing two rooms, a parlour and big verandah were razed down. Thereafter, we became homeless, so I brought my wife and kids to stay in a relation’s place. That was how we relocated.”

Like brother like sister
Ani said that his daughter was okay until a certain man from Nsukka in Enugu State came to seek her hand in marriage. According to him, the man eloped with the girl, adding that by the time she returned home, she had lost her mind even as she nursed a baby.

His words: “In the case of Ozieme, there was a time she travelled to Enugu to stay with her brother. There she started a relationship with one man from Nsukka and they agreed to marry. She brought the man home and introduced him to us. After meeting with us, the man said that he was going to prepare and come back for the formalization of the relationship. She insisted on going with the man; we asked her to wait for the man to go and come but she refused. We didn’t see the man again.

"When she was coming back, she came with a baby and started behaving in a manner we could not understand. We tried all we could to deal with the situation to no avail. This thing happened about five years ago and we have not set eyes on the man ever since. She didn’t have the soundness of mind to breastfeed and properly care for the baby and she died. Right now, she is heavily pregnant, she will be putting to bed anytime and we do not know who is responsible for the pregnancy.

"Again, another of my daughter who is married and a seamstress is also behaving abnormally.

"I cannot explain how this problem came into the family. From our parents, we did not experience any such thing. It did not happen to my eldest brother, who had died.”

‘I don’t know if Shekau is dead or alive’ - Jonathan shocks Nigerians

President Goodluck Jonathan shocked Nigerians on Sunday when he declared that he did not know if the leader of the dreaded sect, Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, was dead or alive.

The Joint Task Force, JTF, in Borno State, had said in a statement August 19 that Mr. Shekau might have died of gunshot wounds he received in an encounter with Force’s troops in one of their camps at Sambisa Forest on June 30.

However, Mr. Shekau appeared in a new video last week, claiming that he was not dead.

He also claimed responsibility for the attacks that killed several civilians on September 17 in Benishek, Borno State.

The military vowed to investigate the claims as well as the authenticity of the video.

Mr. Jonathan, our Commander-in-Chief, who receives briefing from security agencies daily, repeatedly said during the media chat that he could not say if the Boko Haram leader had actually died.

“I don’t know whether he (Shekau) is dead or alive,” the President, said in a response to a question tweeted to the panel of interviewers but read to him.

Gov. Fashola Finally Unveiles The Tallest Hotel In West Africa

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, yesterday, unveiled the N30 billion tallest hotel in West Africa, the Intercontinental Lagos.

The hotel located at Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, is a 23-storey building with 358 rooms, 37 suites and a presidential suite.

The Intercontinental Lagos, a subsidiary of the Intercontinental Hotel Group, IHG, is owned by the Milan Group.

Fashola said the new hotel showed that the economy of the country was witnessing growth daily but without corresponding employment.

According to him, “The new sector is the tourism sector. This is the only virgin sector in the country, and it will help address the challenges of unemployment in the country.”

The governor noted that the new hotel had helped to create new 650 direct jobs in the state, adding that with the construction of more hotels and hospitality outfits, more direct jobs would be created as well as numerous indirect jobs.

Chairman, Milan Group, Ramesh Valechha said the hotel will change the landscape of Lagos and boost the hospitality industry in the state.

He noted that the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, for the project was signed on March 31, 2004 while it took two years to complete the design work before the conceptualisation of the project began.

He revealed that the Lagos State Government, Skye Bank and Wema Bank were supportive of the project.

According to Valechha, building of the hotel cost over N30 billion, while 650 jobs were created for Nigerians.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi; Oba of Lagos, Oba Riliwan Akiolu 1; ex-governor of CBN, Joseph Sanusi, and other dignitaries.

Lagos To Get Five Power Plants By 2014

THE Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to raise the number of Independent Power Plants (IPPs) in the state to five, with a combined capacity of 47.35 Mega Watts (MW) by 2014.

Already, the state government has built two plants in Akute (12.5MW) and Lagos Island (10MW), while plans are in top gear to commission the newly completed Alausa power plant (10.4MW) by next month.

The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Toafeek Ajibade Tijani, recently told The Guardian that Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola was set to commission the Alausa project to ease the power challenges in the state.

“The Alausa IPP, which is set for commissioning in the month of October by Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola will run on environmental-friendly natural gas from Gaslink Limited.

“The power plant, when commissioned, will power the state secretariat complex, Alausa, Lagos Television (LTV8), Lagos State Printing Corporation, Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, Office of the Surveyor-General, proposed Multi-Agency Complex, as well as the staff quarters I, II and III.”

With only 10,000MW of electricity supplied to Lagos from the national grid at peak, he lamented the insufficient supply profile, explaining that the plight necessitated the IPP scheme initiated by the state government to strategically ease the network.

He, therefore, urged Lagosians to desist from wastages and conserve energy with October already declared as Energy Conservation Month.

Tijani noted that about 4,358,000kwh of electricity were wasted in the state yearly, stressing that Lagos required additional 10,000MW to meet the state energy demand.

He said that the state’s public lighting were powered from various energy sources such as diesel, LPG, IPP and solar.

“While diesel is the primary fuel source, the target is to gradually reduce dependency on diesel by connecting more public lighting to IPPs and increasing the use of LPG and solar,” he said.

He added: “Over 13,000 residential, commercial and industrial locations have been audited so far, revealing that just over 10 per cent of the power demanded by Lagosians is being met by the national grid. A total of over 17,000 generators were discovered in the locations audited, implying that every location has at least one generator.

“This necessary practice of self-generation has led to a total consumption of approximately 162,000 litres of diesel a day, resulting in 178lbs of carbon dioxide being emitted per household per day in Lagos.

On average, Lagosians are powering themselves at a cost of N44/kWh, almost four times the cost of supply from the grid,” he said.

ASUU Strike Will Soon Be Called-Off - Okojie

ASUU strike ‘ll soon be called off, says Okojie

Prof. Julius Okojie, Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) says he is confident that the protracted strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will soon be called off.

Okojie, who spoke on Wednesday in Abuja at a media parley with journalists, said the commission was doing everything within its powers to ensure a speedy resolution of the issues raised by ASUU so that students could return school.

“We are part of the system and we understand the issues, we are meeting with members of the union all the time and the issues are being tackled.

“So, we are optimistic the strike will soon be called off and our children can go back to school in the shortest possible time.’’

He also reacted to the call by ASUU for NUC to be scrapped, saying “the call is not in good faith as the commission has not gone to sleep over its duties”.

Also speaking on the recurrent disagreements between the commission and some professional bodies over accreditation and running of certain courses by some universities,

Okojie acknowledged that there were issues that needed to be resolved between both parties.

“There is no country in the world where regulatory bodies and professional bodies go to regulate at the same time.

“So, it is true we are having problems with professional bodies in carrying out our mandate, but the issues too will soon be resolved and we can move on.

The executive secretary, who said that the commission had closed many faculties not fit to run courses in certain universities, admitted that; “it is not easy to be a regulator’’.

According to him, the commission was “silently regulating the system’’ having to also pay professional fees and encourage professors to do accreditation. (NAN).

Asari-dokubo: Arrest Obasanjo, Atiku, Others Now For Role In PDP Crisis

Mr. Asari-Dokubo says Jonathan is unreasonably shielding Amaechi.

The leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, NDPVF, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, has demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his former deputy, Atiku Abubakar, for his alleged role in the raging crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He also asked President Goodluck Jonathan to deal decisively with the members of the “New PDP” led by Kawu Baraje, especially the seven governors in its fold, by arresting their associates.

Mr. Asari-Dokubo, who stated this in an interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday in Abuja, however, refused to speak about former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, who he said had not taken sides with either the breakaway group or the mainstream PDP led by Bamanga Tukur.

REMARKS BY PRESIDENT OBAMA
BEFORE BILATERAL MEETING
WITH PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN
OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA

1:51 P.M. EDT

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, I appreciate very much the opportunity to meet once again with President Jonathan and his delegation. Obviously, Nigeria is one of the most powerful and fastest-growing countries in the world. I think that's testified by the fact that President Jonathan is going to have the opportunity to ring the bell at the New York Stock Exchange. (Laughter.) I think it signifies how important Nigeria is becoming in the global economy.

We have a very strong relationship between the United States and Nigeria. It’s not just based on government-to-government relations, but also people-to-people relations. And we have an outstanding Nigerian-American community here in the United States that is making incredible contributions in every field every single day.

President Jonathan has committed to building on the democratic process that we've seen in Nigeria in the past. The last election that brought President Jonathan to power was a hallmark on the continent and in Nigeria in terms of free and fair elections. And I know that he is committed to making sure that the elections in 2015 move in that same fashion.

We're going to be able to have an opportunity to talk about the issues of energy and power. Nigeria is a major energy producer, but it’s also an important energy consumer. And as many of you know who were on the trip that I took to Africa just recently, we are really focused on how we can help to bring electricity and power generation throughout Africa -- not just in the big cities but also in the rural areas, and Nigeria is a potential partner in that process.

We want to develop the human capital throughout the continent and in Nigeria. And that's why I'm excited about the Young African Leaders Initiative that is going to allow us to have young African leaders from across the continent, including Nigeria, here in the United States where they can interact with top leaders here in our universities, our businesses, and that will further strengthen the ties between our two countries.

And we're going to have an opportunity to discuss some significant challenges on the security front in Nigeria. In the northern regions of Nigeria we've seen the emergence of one of the most vicious terrorist organizations in the world -- the Boko Haram. It presents an extraordinary security challenge for the people of Nigeria, and we want to be cooperative in that process of building capacity inside Nigeria to deal with that terrorist threat, but doing so in a way that is consistent with human rights. Because we strongly believe that the best way to undermine the agenda of those who would do violence is to make sure that governments are responsive to the needs of people and following rule of law.

On that topic let me just make one last point. I've had the opportunity to speak with President Kenyatta directly about the terrible tragedy that's happened in Nairobi, and we are providing all the cooperation that we can as we deal with a situation that has captivated the world.

I want to express personally my condolences to not only President Kenyatta, who lost some family members in the attack, but to the Kenyan people. We stand with them against this terrible outrage that's occurred. We will provide them with whatever law enforcement support that is necessary. And we are confident that Kenya, which has been a pillar of stability in Eastern Africa, will rebuild.

But this I think underscores the degree to which all of us as an international community have to stand against the kind of senseless violence that these kinds of groups represent. And the United States will continue to work with the entire continent of Africa and around the world to make sure that we are dismantling these networks of destruction.

Zamfara Women Protest Over Husband Scarcity

No fewer than 8,000 women on Thursday matched to the Zamfara Hisbah Commission, seeking the state government’s assistance to enable them to get married.

Led by the Chairperson of the Zamfara Widows Association, Hajiya Suwaiba Isa, and the patron, Alhaji Sa’idu Goshe, the women said they were not living a normal life and needed husbands to become whole.

“Many of us cannot afford two meals in a day because there are no men to support us,” they said.

The patron said the association had over 8,000 women, comprising 5,380 divorcees, 2,200 widows, 1,200 orphans and 80 others, whom he said, were looking for men to marry.

He said the women also needed assistance to purchase household items such as beds, mattresses and other basic necessities needed to move to their husbands’ houses.

Goshe appealed to the commission to assist the association in screening suitors for the women.

He said the screening would determine the suitors’ health status, source of livelihood and ability to maintain a family.

Notorious Receiver of Hijacked Vehicles and Alleged Bandits' Sponsor Faces Court in Lagos

Notorious Receiver of Hijacked Vehicles and Alleged Bandits' Sponsor Faces Court in LagosLagos State Police charged the suspected Lagos-based big time receiver of stolen vehicles from armed robbers, Kayode Haruna a.k.a. ‘K’, to Ikeja Magistrate’s Court on September 25, 2013, Wendesday.
The prosecutor Inspector Samson informed the court that the accused person was slammed with a 7-count charge bordering on conspiracy and receiving of stolen vehicles from armed robbers.
Investigation revealed that the manhunt for the suspect started in December 2012, after the SARS operatives arrested Ejike, a suspected robbery gang leader who allegedly led his gang to break into the prison in Shagamu, Ogun State.
Ejike and his gang allegedly confessed that Haruna was the major sponsor of their robbery operation and receiver of the vehicles snatched by the gang.
In an exclusive interview to P.M.News Haruna revealed that he was actually a receiver of stolen vehicles from robbers but did not sponsor robbery operations. He confessed he had received over 30 vehicles from robbers and sold them to car dealers and some private individuals.
“I started buying from them since last year. I bought Highlander Jeep from them for N1 million and Toyota for N300,000. I sold Toyota for N700,000 and Highlander for N1.7 million,” Haruna said.
He further confessed that he built and owned eight houses in with the proceeds of the stolen vehicles he sold.
Haruna added: “I discovered that they were robbers when they brought a car with blood stains on the seat for me to buy. Though I bought the car, but since then, I stopped patronizing them. But I did not report to the police or any other law enforcement agency. I regretted having deals with armed robbers.”
Haruna was arrested after some robbery suspects named him as sponsor and receiver of the vehicles they snatched at gun point.
The accused, Haruna aka ‘K’ was arrested by the operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Lagos State Police Command led by Abba Kyari, a Superintendent of Police, SP.
Haruna pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was granted bail by the president magistrate in the sum of N1 million with two sureties.
The Court President, Mrs. Oshodi Makanju, has adjourned the case 28 November, 2013, for mention.

FG Announces Free Treatment for Dog Bite Victims

FG Announces Free Treatment for Dog Bite VictimsThe Federal Government has declared free treatment in all tertiary hospitals in the country for dog bite victims.
The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, announced this initiative in Abuja on September 26, 2013, Thursday.
The Minister addressed newsmen as part of activities marking World Rabies Day, with the theme, “Rabies: understand it to defeat it”.
Rabies, contracted through dog bite, is a deadly infectious disease caused by a virus which invades the nerves, spinal cord, brain and salivary gland of an infected animal or man. It had become a major public health problem in Nigeria.
Prof. Chukwu, was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Sani Bala.
The Secretary said about 10,000 Nigerians were exposed to dog bite annually. He expressed concern over the failure of many dog owners to vaccinate their animals against rabies.
Moreover, each year more than 55,000 people died globally, including 25,000 in Africa, from rabies infection, adding that although there was no effective treatment for the disease, it was vaccine-preventable.
“Children are often the most vulnerable because they are more likely to be bitten by dogs and also more likely to be severely exposed through multiple bites.
“The challenges of rabies prevention and control in Nigeria are numerous; one of them is that the burden of rabies in human is largely unknown.
“Human cases are often under-diagnosed and under-reported due to lack of diagnostic facilities and trained personnel.
“The passive surveillance used for case detection has been grossly inadequate, all these contribute to lack of accurate and reliable information needed for planning purposes,” Mr. Sani Bala said.
Prof. Chukwu said the ministry would create anti-rabies vaccine centres in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
He said the government would also provide standard operating procedure for treatment of rabies in all health facilities.

There are over 20 reported cases in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, monthly, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. A survey by a correspondent in Ibadan showed that the menace is fast assuming a dangerous dimension with reported abuse of minors.
James Ajibola, the legal adviser to the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) Oyo state chapter, one of those polled in the survey, said that rape was one of the social vices currently ravaging the society. He said that aside from the fact that it has become an aberration, under-aged girls are now major targets of rapists, leaving their victims with horrible experiences.
The legal practitioner said that the Nigeria constitution defines rape and spells out penalties for culprits which range from two to 14 years jail term, depending on the severity of the crime or court’s discretion. He said that it was very difficult to give an accurate statistic of rape cases, because of a number of factors.
According to him, the intervention by various people to settle rape cases out of court had contributed to seeing rapists go unpunished and thus encouraged more rape cases.
“Over 20 new rape cases are recorded on a monthly basis in Ibadan alone, with only one out of 100 per cent rape cases receiving diligent prosecution,” he said. Intimidation and poverty on the part of the victims, he noted, were other reasons why rapists go free. In his own submission, Benjamin Olley, a lecturer at the Department of Psychology, University of Ibadan, described rapists as insane. He wondered why the quest for power and materialism should result into the destruction of innocent and under-aged girls.
“The situation in which men have sexual intercourse with under-aged girls is abnormal,” he said. He recommended that psychiatric tests be carried out on rapists, wondering why any man, in the name of ritual or power, would defile the opposite sex. Mr. Olley noted that the act had many negative implications for the victims.
“They are exposed to various sexually transmitted diseases and more often than not, they lose their self-esteem or could even become promiscuous,” he said. A rape victim who gave her horrible experience in court during a cross examination felt dejected in her account.
The victim, a 25-year old undergraduate student of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, said that the rapist threatened to behead her if she refused to allow him. The two-month pregnant lady narrated that the culprit had other men who collaborated with him to ensure that the illicit act was carried out on her in spite of her plea. “When I was shouting, some men were there, but did not help me,” she said

12 Kirikiri Inmates Narrowly Missed Freedom’

At least 12 convicted persons serving jail terms for offences categorized as “special and simple offences” narrowly missed being released by the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Ayotunde Phillips.
The convicted persons are serving jail terms of about 390 days for violating the state environmental sanitation laws. A director of an NGO, Prisoners’ Rights Advocacy Initiative(PRAI), Mr. Ahmed Adetola-Kazeem, said the convicted persons, some of whom are under aged, were sentenced by a Special Offences Court in Alausa, Ikeja, sometimes between July and September for violating the state environmental laws.
Adetola-Kazeem, whose NGO is handling some of the convicts’ cases said the chief judge declined to order their release because they had gone through trial and convicted. In views of this, she reportedly said that it’s only the governor that can grant them amnesty.
The Director of PRAI said one of the convicts, Chinedu John, for instance, was sentenced to 390 days imprisonment by the court for allegedly violating the state environment sanitation laws.
Another convicted person – Dotun Owokiigbe (15) was sentenced in July 15 to one- year imprisonment for similar offence.
Adetola-Kazeem said the convicts were sentenced to prison terms in spite of a subsisting directive of the CJ that magistrates of the Special Offences Court should desist from sending convicts to jail terms in prison alongside hardened criminals.

ASUU Strike Update: NUT Gives Two-Week Ultimatum to FG, Lecturers

ASUU Strike Update: NUT Gives Two-Week Ultimatum to FG, LecturersThe Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) gave a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resolve the strike, embarked upon by university lecturers.
Mr. Michael Olukoya, the NUT President stated this in Abuja at the end of the Union’s meeting with teachers' representatives across the country on September 26, 2013, Thursday.
Mr. Olukoya said that members of the Union would not hesitate to close down the nation’s schools, if the two parties failed to reach agreement after two weeks.
He described the current ASUU strike “as nationalistic, patriotic and self-sacrificing”.
“We will not hesitate to shut down the education system in the country, if the government fails to fulfil or honour the agreement it entered into with the lecturers.”
It would be recalled that ASUU had embarked on a strike it described as “comprehensive, total and indefinite” on July 1, 2013.
The lecturers are protesting the non-implementation of some issues, contained in an agreement the Union had entered into with the Federal Government since 2009.

Teacher’s Issues
The NUT President said that Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo’s call for a complete over-haul of teachers' qualification as unacceptable to the NUT. He said that the blame should be put on the door steps of the employers and not teachers.
“NUT will forever be proud of all its teachers, believing that all employment agencies are corruption-free, disciplined and quality conscious in their employment drives.”
Mr. Olukoya also urged the governors of Kogi, Benue and Cross River to honour the agreement they made with teachers on the payment of 27.5 per cent teachers salary structure.
