Four French hostages kidnapped in Niger free after three years

Four French hostages kidnapped by Al-Qaeda-linked militants in Niger have been released after more than three years in captivity.
The exact circumstances of their release were not immediately clear, but French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said there had been “no assault” to free the hostages and that no ransom had been paid.
Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told AFP the hostages had been freed in Mali and were in “very good shape”.
“They have been hostages for three years and the nightmare is finally over,” Fabius said.

Death toll in Yobe’s Army, Boko Haram clash hits 128

THE number of those who died in weekend’s clash between the military and Islamic militants has been put at 128. Military and hospital reports said, yesterday, that the five-hour-long battle between Boko Haram extremists and troops in Yobe State killed at least 95 militants, 23 soldiers and eight police officers.
Last Monday, 35 bodies in military uniform were reportedly brought to a morgue in Damaturu after a coordinated assault by Boko Haram targeting the security forces, a hospital source said.
Police and residents said large numbers of Boko Haram fighters, some in vehicles and some on foot, stormed Damaturu after dark. Armed with guns and explosives, they attacked and torched four police

Okada man jailed 2 years for cheating

A Zuba Grade 1 Area Court in the Federal Capital territory, Monday, sentenced Hassan Tanko, 20, a motorcyclist of Sabiri-Dei Dei, FCT, to 3 months in prison for cheating.
The Presiding Judge, Mallam Alhassan Kusherki, sentenced Tanko after he pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of cheating.
Kusherki, however, gave the convict an option of N10,000 fine. He also ordered the convict to pay N16,000 as compensation to the complainant.
The prosecutor said Tanko deceived one Sunday Chado in April and collected N16,000 from him with a promise to rent a room for him.

'Jonathan Will Rule Till 2019 Then Handover To The Youths' - Tukur

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur has said that President Goodluck Jonathan will rule the country till 2019, after which he will handover to a younger member of the party.

Tukur made this known yesterday, when members of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Anambra State branch paid him a visit at his Wuse residence.

US Senator Ted Cruz has asked for a peace meeting with Nigerian-Americans who have demanded that he retracts his controversial joke last week which many of them considered insulting.

“Let me use this opportunity to appeal to both the Executive arm and the authorities of ASUU to quickly resolve the problem. If there is need for any appropriation, the House will expeditiously assent to it in the interest of our students and the nation.”

The Speaker spoke in Abuja when he received a briefing on the update of the ASUU strike from the Aminu Suleiman-led House Committee on Education.

The House mandated the Education committee to investigate the face-off by highlighting the areas of conflict and proffer solutions.

Tambuwal urged all parties to consider the interest of the students and the educational future of the nation.

Gunmen kill vigilante, friend

Four gunmen, yesterday, killed the chairman of a vigilance group in Agbassa, Warri, Delta State and his friend.
Criminals in Agbassa area reportedly resolved to eliminate him as he was an obstacle to their operations in the area.
Vanguard gathered that the deceased was walking along Ginuwa Road, off Warri-Sapele Road, Warri, with a friend when the gunmen attacked them.
While his friend died on the spot, the vigilance group head died in hospital.
Residents ran for safety, while shop owners closed business for the day.

Kanye certainly has the balls to speak his mind, but this weekend he actually showed off a lot more than he bargained for during his concert in Seattle when his pants totally split at the seams, putting his crotch on full display.

EFFECT OF THIS ASUU STRIKE ON STUDENTS AND LECTURERS: THE GAINS AND THE LOSSES TO COME

It is no longer news that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been on strike for almost four months now. I have done an empirical analysis of what Nigerian students as well as lecturers will gain and lose as a result of the current struggle. Read, digest and see if we need to support them any longer or not.

GAIN OF LECTURERS

1. Increased allowances for project supervision, call duty, extra hours worked, hazards, etc.
2. Payment of salaries and entitlements for the several months in which they didn’t work!
3. Those schools that did not partake in the struggle e.g UNILORIN and RSUST will also benefit from the infrastructure funds and the earned allowances (needless to say UNILORIN almost began sharing the almost one (1) billion they got for earned allowances last week)

NEGATIVE EFFECT OF THE STRIKE ON LECTURERS

1. Delay in obtaining Masters and PhD’s for those still doing their postgraduate studies.
2. I cant fathom out any. Please, help me if you have been able to think of any other one.

Don’t call me Commander-in-Chief – Jonathan

In what is a clear departure from the norm, the presidency has ordered all government functionaries to desist from addressing President Goodluck Jonathan as the “Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria” at non-military functions.

COALITION of Civil Society Organizations, Market women and students have staged a protest with placards of different inscriptions at the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, over the continuous strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, alleging that the strike has increased prostitution in the country.

The group which noted that the strike was entering the fourth month appealed to the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, the Trade Union Congress, TUC and appealed to the union to call off the strike in the interest of Nigerians.

SHOCKING: Governor Akpabio Is Barred From Aso-Rock by Goodluck Jonathan

Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio, the Akwa Ibom State governor may have been barred from the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, over what insiders refer to as his “poor comportment and misbehaviour” inside the seat of the Nigerian federal government.

During a recent visit to the Aso Rock Villa, the governor of the oil-rich state and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum was, during a recent visit to the Aso Rock Villa, said to have distributed large sums of dollars to security men and presidential aides who were on duty inside the Villa, which got to the ears of the President.

Governor Akpabio’s seemingly corrupt influences may have prompted the decision of President Goodluck Jonathan, to bar him from the villa.

Akpabio is said to be in the corrupt habit of sharing thousands of dollars to staff of the presidential villa during his visits.

So much so that staff of the villa always looks forward to his visit and sometimes, hang around the premises even when they would have completed their shift in anticipation of Akpabio’s dollar rain!

Akpabio recently paid another unscheduled visit to Aso Rock unaware of the President’s stance over his reckless behavior.

He was therefore expecting the usual red carpet reception from the staff, but to his shock was denied entry and had to turn back with his entourage in shame.

Acting on “orders from above” the security details refused to open the gate for him and asked him instead to go back to avoid further embarrassment.

It was rude shock when the governor attempted to speak with the Nigerian First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan over the issue.

The First Lady, in her characteristic bluntness told Akpabio who has made Abuja his second home to go back to Uyo and exercise his mandate of governing Akwa Ibom state instead of turning himself into a nuisance in Abuja.

Godswill Akpabio has lately acquired the reputation of an “unserious governor” who is always giving away hefty sums of state resources for flimsy reasons.

The governor’s sponsorship of singer Tuface Idibia’s marriage to Annie Macauley, an indigene of Akwa Ibom state in faraway Dubai also earned him the nickname of “Donatus”.

Akpabio’s gift of N50 million to Nollywood among several other donations, in the recent past, seems not to have gone down well with some indigenes of the state who are wallowing in poverty over unpaid salary.

Akpabio has also been accused by the residents of Uyo of abandoning Akwa Ibom state, a state he fought so hard to govern especially during his campaign for re-election for Abuja, where he is said to be operating from.

“Our Governor now lives in Abuja and does not seem to care about whatever happens here. He only parachutes in to commission projects or declare open seminars and workshops and thereafter goes back to Abuja”, said a senior party official who would not want his name in print.

Akpabio’s very frequent visits to the Presidential villa and his unruly behaviour were said to be giving President Goodluck Jonathan some serious concerns, and may have informed Jonathan’s decision to restrict his visit to the Villa. Akpabio, a PDP poster boy is for now at some crossroads over the turn of events.

A 33 year old man is on the run after murdering his wife with acid. “The reaction of Goodluck Jonathan’s Presidential Cry Babies to Tinubu’s extensive comments on the proposed national conference was predictable. As usual, rather than deal with the salient and substantial issues surrounding the proposed National Conference raised by Former Governor Tinubu, the reaction from the presidency skirted around them.

In typical fashion, it resorted to abusive language and name calling. Okupe, like a punch drunk pugilist, threw several empty jabs and went on a flight of fancy praising his boss and flaunting fictional achievements of the administration in the face of Nigerians.

We leave it to Nigerians to judge. They are the ones who feel the pains and millions will not be able to relate to all the fictional transformational achievements reeled out by the Presidency.

Nigerians are saddled with a President who believes fiction is more important than fact and imagination is more genuine than reality. While we would not mind such a person to be a leading figure in our Nollywood film industry, I am frightened that he is the Chief Resident of Aso Villa and surrounded by a cast of like minds.

Tinubu’s searching questions about the Jonathan Conference remain fundamental. We urge Jonathan and his cry babies to take time to read through the statement and address the cloud of doubts surrounding the proposed conference. This is a flip-flopping Presidency and on this issue it must provide answers.

Tinubu is satisfied that he has raised the provocative questions that need be asked and no amount of shadow boxing and presidential foul language can change that.”

Seventeen fake members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), have been arrested by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

They were picked up at the NYSC Orientation Camp at Kubwa, Abuja, on Thursday evening while they were posing and taking pictures outside the camp during the passing-out ceremony.

In a statement made available, the commission said its operatives stormed the camp based on intelligence reports and arrested the suspects comprising eight females and nine males.

It said preliminary investigation revealed that 15 of the suspects claimed to have enrolled in degree courses run by consultancy services in the University of Calabar (6), University of Jos (6), Ebonyi State University (1), Federal University of Technology, Owerri (1) and Crown Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti (1).

One of the fake corps members, the commission noted, never attended any university, but said she was desirous of getting a discharge certificate. Another suspect, a young man, impersonated his sister, a genuine corps member who was receiving medical treatment abroad, in order to collect her
